Rumput Itu Lebih Hijau

Ever heard the phrase "The grass is greener on the other side"?

Sure you have! You think about it all day long don't you? At least I tend to. Well, not all day long *defensive mode*. I think about it when I think about it. Fair enough.

For those of you boring, literal, non-metaphorical people, the metaphor above refers to the human's tendency to look at other people as being more fortunate than they are. Hence, it always looks better on the other side than on our side.

Weird huh? If the grass is always greener on the other side, and our "other side" is the other side, and the other side's "other side" is our side, then which grass is actually greener? I'm not sure if you even understood with that awkward statement but if you could just bear with me, I assure you that you'll get even more confused. Eh?

The point is, sometimes we get too caught up in what others have and we don't, that we forget what we do have and we fail to take advantage of that. Take vision for example. Some people would dream of being blessed with the gift of sight and here we are, failing to appreciate this wonderful gift. That's just a simple example. I'll leave it to you guys to think of even more.

Truth is,

The grass is greener where you water it. Why waste time looking over the fence when you can spend your time working on perfecting your own lawn? In other words, stop comparing what others have! Start improving yourself with what you already have!

So next time you see someone sheepishly peering over their fence to take a look at your lawn, just give them this piece of advice: Water your grass you lazypants!

The Great Gatsby

It was finals week. Everyone else was pulling up an all-nighter, studying their ass off for the final the next day. What was I doing? I was having a novel-reading marathon. Yup. Finished more books that week than the amount of books the whole year. One of the books that I've read, as you might guess, is The Great Gatsby. It was one of the books listed on the must-read books list on goodreads so I borrowed it from the library.

I haven't seen the movie before I went read the book, so I pretty much didn't know the story at all. What immediately caught my attention was the quote at the beginning of the book. It was a quote by the author's father.
"Whenever you feel like critisizing anyone, just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had" - Nick's dad
That's just one of the truest quotes I've ever read my entire life. Nick's dad must've been a genius! Anyway, I do not intend on elaborating the quote, mostly because I'm not qualified enough and partially because I think it's wonderful for us to ponder upon it on our own. Mind-blowing, when you read and internalize it again and again.

The Great Gatsby was a great book, but it was also one of the few books that I hardly understand a thing. I mean, I do understand the events, but I don't think I fully understood the main gist of the book. ie the hidden meaning and all those literature stuff. I also read 1984 and Animal Farm by George Powell. All of them are heavy books that I'd recommend to anyone looking for some tough reading. Anyway, I've run out of words to say. I'm also dangerously running out of ideas to write in this blog. Hope the quote above blew you away just as it did to me.

When I Read Too Much Romance

Sigh. There's a reason I avoid romance novels, and it has nothing to do with the uncensored details on kissing (and the like) whatsoever. I avoid romance novels because they make me feel like puking out rainbows - in a bad way. But somehow, by some mere coincidence that might have something to do with fate, just recently, two romance novels made it to my reading list (and I did puke out rainbows. good thing they're invisible). So, when I read too much romance, this is what happens:

"If a single person can evoke emotions in you with an intensity that you have never experienced before - be it sadness, happiness, guilt, etc. -, then that person must somehow mean a great deal to you"

"It's amazing how the person who upsets me so easily is also the person who cheers me up just as easy"

"When reading something someone wrote about their crush, how long would it take for you to realise that they are actually talking about you?"

"If you like a person and you use a metaphor of the human vision to describe how he/she sees you, you might fall into one of three groups. The first is right at his/her focal point. The second is somewhere at the retina and the third is directly in the blind spot. There's a high chance that you might fall into the latter"

That last part sounds like crappy shit. Okay, they all sound like shit, but the last is definitely the shittiest (I used the word shit three times in a single paragraph. Wait, make that four).

I can be highly influenced by what I read. In terms of language, that is. Like the time when I did a Harry Potter book marathon that lasted for weeks, I actually thought that I might sound like some witch from Hogwarts. Blimey, this was all Voldermort's idea! Oh no, I said his name out loud! Bloody hell now he's gonna chase me and kill me with one of his Avada Kedavra magic and I'm doomed oh please help me Harry for you have the ability to repel against his dark magic thank you so much oh Ron is so cute when he was little.

Now that's lame. I am officially a disgrace to all Harry Potter fans. Boo me. Frowney face :(

This blog post seems to be getting nowhere. Anywho, the main point is that reading influences my language a lot. I mean, a LOT. I kinda like it cause I'm naturally not that good with words especially when speaking. Just for your information, The Fault In Our Stars features the most sweetest romance I have ever seen in my entire life. Maybe it's the fact that both of them share the same job: Having Cancer, or is it something else? It's the first time I read something so romantic without having the urge to facepalm and say "eww" and puke. I think I'm gonna cry now.

In other news, school have just started and the exam results are out. No further discussions are deemed necessary.

Hey

Between humility and low self-esteem, there exists a line that tells us that the two ought to be seen as totally distinct characteristics.~

Budak-budak Biotech

I was having my breakfast when Dalila Safiah told me that Kak Zana (our previous biotech instructor during PCS 2012) is having an Akikah and we're invited. Yay! I thought I was going to bore to death today being cooped up in my room all day long (too lazy to go for outing). Then Kasdi phoned me (I actually don't save anybody of my friend's number in my mobile phone. Just putting that out there) asking me whether I'd join in for the Akikah. Of course I would. Haha.

Dr Zul (another biotech instructor who happens to be Kak Zana's husband) picked us up at around 1.45 p.m. There were 9 of us: Abul Munzeer, Kasdi, Ruzainy, Where, Dalila, Alifah, Amalin, Siew and me. Lepas tu kan.. ada orang tu yang nampak stress gila naik motor. Sampai berkerut dahi. Si pembonceng pulak nampak sangat lawak. Memang kami dalam kereta tu ketawa gila-gila la XD. Being able to be their guest was truly an honour, and it's been so long since I myself experienced such festivity and family-bonding. Rasa best bila dapat mengalami perasaan "kekeluargaan" itu. (cehh ayat...)

We ate, chat, joked around, and played with some kids. The food was nice. Looking at the kuih still on the plate, the guys were like, "Weyh, si Dalila nak tu" "Malin, aku tau kau nak". And Kasdi was being his natural self - the playboyish part of him XD.

Oh, and we took pictures.

Just

A few notes for yesterday and today.

There are sometimes people who judge. Be it their speech, act, or their mere presence. The air of judgmental accompanies them at every step that they take. I'm not trying to point fingers. Rather, I wish to state the degree of my dislike towards people who judge. Of course, we humans can never be able to rid ourselves totally of putting on impressions; but we can try. It makes me feel somewhat less confident when people start mocking or showing doubt explicitly, such that the look on their faces discloses their judgement to the public. Part of the blame is on me though, for I should train myself to not be affected by people's views as long as I'm doing what's right. Thankfully enough, this one person enabled me to feel the pleasure of doing whatever I feel like doing, for he shows no sign of holding any impression on me. Likable, amicable, amiable, delightful, charming. It made my day...

Math Quote

I was getting my brain abused by all these college application essays that I decided to get some help from someone. There happens to be a college that asks me to indicate my "intellectual interests" and what it is about them that makes them so special. So I decided to ask my mum this: How do you define Mathematics?

She took a deep breath and replied:
"Mathematics is all about logic and never magic. Everything that you come up with has reason behind it. Although mathematics seem solely about numbers and what not, those "numbers" don't just appear out of nowhere. The units even. You can't simply poof up RM20 from 20."     -Mum
Deep. Those weren't her words exactly though, but close enough. And I nodded in agreement. Well, she is my Math guru. Logic. Mathematics is about logic. I began tap-tap-tapping on the keyboard again. I sighed.

Through these college essays (which are mostly due by early next year), I actually learnt to dig deep into myself. These essays aren't your typical English language exams. They're more of trying to get you to know yourself, and really I was able to reflect on numerous things in my past.

Think of it this way. Literature. In English class,
